- Yes, it's for real. All the new Sportster 33.6K's that have the new
- "tiny" TI chipset (versus the old Courier/Sportster big DSP and datapump)
- are $149, at *both* CompUSA and Computer City here in Rochester NY.
- CompUSA has a whole pile of them stacked up and advertised at $149.
-
- Compare this to their price on the 28.8K Sporster Vi (which from the
- box still has the original Sportster/Courier DSP and data pump chipset)
- for $219. It's also quite intriguing that CompUSA slapped "free help"
- stickers on the boxes that invariably on all the boxes I've seen,
- completely cover the picture of the internal with the new "tiny" TI
- chipset.
-
- I suggest that new "tiny" TI chipset is quite a departure from the
- original modem design. QUITE a departure. You could argue the new ones
- are a completely different design, inheiriting nothing from the earlier
- Courier/Sportster but the Sportster name.
-
- BTW, the 10/95 ROMS that come on these new Sportster's apperently *can't*
- be used on the old Sportsters. This is something I've discovered in the
- last few days. The coding on the new ROM's appears to be for a completely
- different chipset (surprise) and instruction set than the old ones.
-
- ATI7 reports a Supervisor and DSP revision of 1.0.x (ROM is dated 10/95),
- and it also reports a DSP running at 92Mhz.
-
- I'm quite intrigued by the seemingly sudden major change in hardware.
-
- "Curiouser, and curiouser," said Alice.
